How to Maximize the Life of Your Appliances

Your appliances make your home a more comfortable, sanitary, and enjoyable place to live. To maximize the life of your appliances and avoid the cost of premature replacements, maintain your appliances and have them repaired as soon as problems arise. Here are some simple ways to get the most out of four major appliances.

Refrigerator

The biggest appliance in most kitchens is the refrigerator. It’s also one of the most expensive. To maximize the life of your refrigerator, clean the condenser coils on the back of the unit. These coils help cool the air inside your refrigerator. When dirty, they won’t work as well. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and remove any dirt and debris on the coils with a vacuum cleaner and brush attachment.

Microwave

Not everything is intended to go in the microwave. Certain items explode, melt, or damage the appliance when exposed to microwaves. Plastic and glass are okay, as long as long as they are labeled as being safe for microwave use, but other items are never acceptable. Don’t use metal pans, paper bags, plastic bags, twist ties, or recycled paper products when cooking with the microwave.

Washer

To maximize the lifespan of your washer, don’t overload the wash cycle with too many garments. Not only will your clothes not get as clean, you run the risk of wearing down the moving parts of your washing machine over time. When running the wash, only use liquid bleach, as most machines aren’t intended for use with powered bleach.

Dryer

Clean out your lint screen after each load and scrub it with hot water and soap once or twice a year. To clear out other lint buildup, check the dryer’s exhaust hood once in a while. Hot air should be coming out of the exhaust whenever the dryer is running. If no hot air is being exhausted, there could be a lint blockage, which creates a fire hazard.
